Russian edition of “12 Steps to a Closer Walk With God” now released in Ukraine!

EEM has launched a new book in the Russian language that provides a Christ-centered solution to alcoholism and other forms of addictive behaviors.

The recently translated book, "12 Steps to a Closer Walk with God," was written by Don Umphrey and has been available in the U.S. since 1992.  It offers a biblically based solution to a common human struggle with addictions.  EEM’s goal in releasing this book is to help Russian churches and individuals minister not only to addicted individuals but to their families as well. 

Umphrey’s book discusses the biblical basis of the 12 steps to recovery formulated by the program of Alcoholics Anonymous during the 1930s. It describes each of the 12 steps in terms of scriptures and biblical characters. For example, the prodigal son realized his powerlessness when he found himself starving to death in a pigsty (Luke 15: 16).  This is parallel to Step One, “We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol, that our lives had become unmanageable.” 

With minor wording changes, the steps are now used by some 200 different groups to address a wide variety of problems, such as overeating, gambling, and sexual addiction. 

Umphrey is a member of the Prestoncrest congregation in Dallas, Texas, and he donated to EEM exclusive rights to translate, publish and distribute his 12-step book in both the Russian and Ukrainian languages.  The Ukraine book is forthcoming. 

In originally writing this material, Umphrey’s goal was to help others find a Christ-based solution to their addiction problems, the very same as he did.  Sober through the grace of God since 1973, Umphrey’s own alcoholism nearly led to his death at age 27.  In the years since, he has earned a Ph.D. in communication, authored several books and was named a professor emeritus at Southern Methodist University. 
He and his wife, Kim, founded the book publishing firm, Quarry Press, in 2001.  It is dedicated to publishing Christian literature focusing mainly on issues related to addiction-recovery and Christian living.  Its website is www.quarrypressbooks.com. 

Umphrey’s just-released book is titled "Seeking Spiritual Clarity: The Murky Perspective of Evil."  It shows how Satan attempts to work in the everyday lives of individuals. 

Besides his writing, Umphrey also speaks at congregations on the topic addiction recovery and also organizes workshops on this topic.
